This house plan features elements for multigenerational living, like a curbless shower with grab bars. This layout, complete with dual primary bedrooms and a future guest suite over the garage, leaves plenty of room for adult children and aging parents to stay under one roof. As an alternate plan for the Summertime Lowcountry, the apartment over the garage features a suite with a kitchenette, living room, dining area, and bath. It eliminates the third garage bay to allow for private entry stairs and storage. For in-laws who would prefer to enter at the ground level, set up a guest suite in the walkout basement. Interior mother-in-law suites are located within the house where the family resides.

Take a gander through these beautiful Southern Living House Plans with in-law suites to find a new place to call home. If the basement has been transformed into an in-law suite, it will typically have its own kitchen, bedroom, bath, and living area. Often they have a walk-out basement that provides a separate entrance into the house. A typical mother-in-law suite consists of a sleeping quarter, living quarter, kitchen, and bathroom. Delight in this house with a primary bedroom suite with a private covered porch. The lower level features a bedroom suite that opens onto a private covered terrace.

Expand the daylight basement to fit your family's needs, with a recreation room, game room, wet bar, and screened porch. Ultimately you, either as the buyer of a multigenerational home or as the seller, will have to assess the value of having, or building an in-law suite. As you prepare to start building, think about the future use of the suite, especially if you are building a detached unit. You may want to rent the unit out and having separate electricity, water, and gas run to the ADU will enable you to keep utilities separate from the main house.

These zoning laws, occupancy codes, and even homeowner’s association covenants, conditions, and restrictions (CCRs) will dictate exactly what you can do. Get to know Fresno, CA

For example,  there are several variations of in-law suites, as described above, and combined with varying finishes and amenities this will all impact the value of your home differently. So even though mother-in-law suites are continuing to gain in popularity, not every neighborhood has a house with a mother-in-law suite that can act as a suitable comparable sale when determining your home’s value. Mother-in-law suites are becoming a more and more popular home trend among families today. According to USA Today, approximately 51 million Americans live in multigenerational households, a 10% increase since 2007. Nonetheless, the value your home gains from adding a mother-in-law suite will largely depend on your area and what type of addition you make to your home.

Often, the purpose of a mother-in-law suite is to make it possible for elderly family members to live near their adult children or family members, yet still, maintain their independence and privacy. This is very common in multi-generational households where children often live with their parents and grandparents in the same house. This charming ranch features a wide, pillared front porch and board and batten siding.

Our 2010 Georgia Idea House is a commanding, coastal-inspired looker with room for the whole family, thanks to a studio apartment over the garage. A first-level guest suite in the main house also provides an alternate private space for guests. This pretty-as-a-picture farmhouse includes an optional in-law suite on the second level that adds 725 square feet, complete with a kitchenette, full bath, living and sleeping spaces, and a second laundry room. The suite has stairs up from outside of the garage for a dedicated entry, but also connects to the main house. The guest suite above the garage, with its kitchen, living room, and bath, is a completely private space, but has the benefit of being just a stone's throw from the rest of the family in the main house.

This map is refreshed with the newest listings matching mother in law suite in Fresno every 15 minutes. The flexible design of this gracious seaside cottage offers multiple spaces for in-laws and guests. The garage apartment has its own kitchen, full bath, and balcony, while each of the bedrooms in the main house has a full bath and private entrance.

This could be in a basement that has been converted or in the main portion of the house such as a study or a den. Some homes have floor plans that comfortably accommodate bringing in extended family members. These homes have bedrooms at opposite ends of the house, and separate bathroom facilities for both generations.

This will also allow you to shut them completely off if the building were to be vacant for a period of time. As you can see, the cost to remodel, build, or buy space for a mother-in-law suite is dependent upon many individual factors. This makes it difficult to pinpoint an exact cost in any given situation. However, starting with space you already have such as a basement, attic, or garage, you could save some money overbuilding or buying a new stand-alone structure. An attached mother-in-law suite includes a separate living space built onto an existing home and is often attached to the side of the house or the back as an addition. One reason why they are so popular is that this living arrangement allows both generations to share in the financial responsibilities that come with homeownership.

A vacant, detached in-law suite could also just be used as a she-shed or man cave, the possibilities are endless. Mike is part of the Content Marketing team and enjoys applying market insights to provide valuable content on all things real estate. Mother-in-law suites can be as simple as a single room that has a bed, couch, and place to eat, along with access to a bathroom, but ideally, it would have its own private bathroom. Keep your relative’s needs in mind when you are in the design stage as well. Thinking about the future can make a more seamless transition for your relatives down the road.

In addition to houses in Fresno, there were also 47 condos, 2 townhouses, and 30 multi-family units for sale in Fresno last month. Fresno is a minimally walkable city in Fresno County with a Walk Score of 47. Use filters to narrow your search by price, square feet, beds, and baths to find homes that fit your criteria. Our top-rated real estate agents in Fresno are local experts and are ready to answer your questions about properties, neighborhoods, schools, and the newest listings for sale in Fresno.

A breezeway connects the main house to a full apartment—the Casita suite—complete with separate sleeping and living areas. Yet a third reason there has been an increase in interest in an “in-law” suite is due to an increase in the number of people that can work from home on a permanent basis. According to Pew Research, about 54% of employed workers would like to work from home. That is nearly a 30% increase over the number of workers who had been working from home before the Coronavirus pandemic. Many of these workers prefer to have a designated area in which to conduct their business while keeping the family living area separate. Another reason why in-law suites are so popular today is due to the need to downsize and the sharp rise in the cost of assisted living facilities for aging adults.

These are typically smaller, separate homes that are constructed on the same lot that holds a single-family residential house. They vary in size, features, and styles to suit personal tastes and needs. In its simplest form, a mother-in-law suite is a residence created within a home,  an addition built onto a home, or a separate dwelling unit intended for the use of an in-law or relative. The suite can be either connected to or built on the same lot as a home that’s occupied by other family members.

Nationwide, the average monthly cost of assisted living in the United States is around $4,300. They can also be located in a separate portion of the house, such as a basement with a separate door, garage, or attic that has been remodeled and suited to the residents’ needs. The concept of a mother-in-law suite, or now more popularized as the “granny flat,” has been around for decades. It was most popular in post-WWII America until zoning laws were put in place that eventually shut down their construction. Today, the mother-in-law suite, whether it’s a portion of a house that has been remodeled to accommodate a relative, or a smaller, detached “granny flat,” is beginning to see a resurgence with homeowners. Yes, mother-in-law suites can add value to your property but it’s difficult to say exactly how much.

While the existing plan features 6,265 heated square feet, you can add the Bluebird Cottage Plan 2026 to the property to complete the estate and add a designated space to accommodate guests or family members. Dual main suites make this a suitable plan for families who want everyone under one roof but with a little more personal space than a traditional guest room would allow.

Paul M Mintz, antiques dealer who found valuable painting at a Baltimore thrift store, dies

edgar allan poe house and museum

Mr. Mintz resumed painting about 25 years ago and would decorate ravens on sweatshirts and neckties. He sold his works at the Pearl Gallery in Hampden and had his artwork reproduced on greeting cards. He exhibited at an Edgar Allan Poe themed show at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the old 26th Street Gallery and at the Peale Museum. He sold tin antique toys — including likenesses of Barney Google (a comic strip character created by Billy DeBeck) and Walt Disney figures. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany as a medic.

After his mother died in Richmond, Virginia, in 1811, he was taken into the home of John Allan, a Richmond merchant (presumably his godfather), and of his childless wife. He was later taken to Scotland and England (1815–20), where he was given a classical education that was continued in Richmond. He went to Boston, where in 1827 he published a pamphlet of youthful Byronic poems, Tamerlane, and Other Poems. Poverty forced him to join the army under the name of Edgar A. Perry, but, on the death of Poe’s foster mother, John Allan purchased his release from the army and helped him get an appointment to the U.S. Before going, Poe published a new volume at Baltimore, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems (1829).

Waffle House shooter found guilty on 4 counts of murder : NPR

Reinking looked in the direction of his parents, sitting in the gallery, after the jury read the first of 16 guilty verdicts, but otherwise showed minimal reaction. Meanwhile, survivors of the shooting and family members sitting across the aisle audibly gasped, crying and hugging as they left the courtroom. "True justice is having my son here," Dasilva's mother, Shaundelle Brooks, told reporters after the verdict. "This is the closest (thing) to true justice."The jury will reconvene on Saturday to hear victim impact statements and decide whether Reinking will spend the rest of his life in prison or will have the possibility of parole.

Father of Waffle House shooting suspect could face charges, ATF says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A man who shot and killed four people at a Nashville Waffle House in 2018 was found guilty on four counts of first-degree murder Friday by a jury that rejected his insanity defense. The jury on Friday also convicted Reinking on four counts of attempted first-degree murder and four counts of unlawful employment of a firearm during commission of or attempt to commit a dangerous felony. In addition to the four people he killed, he seriously wounded Sharita Henderson and Shantia Waggoner.

The Minnesota shooting began about 2am when police were called to a home where a man, reported to have a gun, was barricaded inside with family members. The man in the home then fired at the first responders as they entered the home, where there were also seven children. ET to discuss the arrest of Waffle House shooting suspect Travis Reinking. Nashville police are crediting a "citizen's tip" for leading them to the suspect in the Waffle House shooting, they said shortly after 29-year-old Travis Reinking was captured while walking through the woods. After the firearms seizure, Reinking was legally prohibited from possessing guns, Matthew Espenshade, an FBI agent located in Nashville, said Monday. “It is possible if you transfer weapons knowingly to a person that is prohibited.

Arrest

He was ordered to a mental health evaluation in the weeks after the attack, and his defense team based much of the case on questions about his state of mind. The police chief, Stacey Graves, said the suspects “hurt innocent people, simultaneously scarring an entire community”, according to a police department statement. Meanwhile, on Friday, a family court in Kansas City said that two juveniles had been charged in connection with the deadly shooting at the end of a parade on Wednesday celebrating the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl victory. After police took the BMW back the next day, he wrote, “This time I would have to punish them by taking something they couldn’t take back, some of their own lives,” the prosecutor said. Travis Reinking, 33, did not dispute the details of the shooting, which was caught on surveillance video and witnessed by numerous people. Waffle House shooting suspect Travis Reinking was carrying a firearm and a flashlight when he was arrested this afternoon, police said.

That could potentially be a violation of federal law,” Watson said in an afternoon press conference. "This court can't be led by the emotion of the day. It can't be led by its desire to want to react to the emotional cries." "Any concurrent sentence for any of the crimes this jury has convicted the defendant on... would be saying someone's life, someone's injury should just be merged, should not count," Deputy District Attorney Roger Moore argued.

Davidson County Assistant District Attorney General Ronald Dowdy suggested that Reinking was acting out of revenge. He noted that days before the shooting, Reinking stole a BMW from a dealership. Reinking wrote in a journal about plans to drive to Colorado, describing a life in which he would hang out with friends, smoke marijuana, hike in the mountains and “repossess” cars and houses so that he would not have to work, Dowdy said. Prosecutors presented evidence that Reinking was calm and cooperative after his arrest, able to understand and respond to commands. Although Reinking was naked when he walked from the crime scene, when he was captured nearly two days later, he was dressed and carrying a backpack loaded with water bottles, sunscreen, a pistol, ammunition, Bible and several silver bars. And they mentioned he had asked to talk to an attorney after his arrest.

Shortly afterwards paramedics arrived and loaded Dasilva, her on-and-off boyfriend of seven years, onto a gurney. “Right before they carried him away, I just told him, ‘I love you’,” she said. Waggoner testified Monday that after she and Dasilva were shot, she called 911 but got frustrated when they kept asking for an address, which she didn’t know. Her sleepy, confused mother, at first thought Waggoner said she was taking shots of alcohol, which made Waggoner laugh, despite everything. Kayla Shaw testified Tuesday that she heard the struggle but did not look up. Once she heard others moving and talking, she ran toward the back of the restaurant, slipping on Dasilva’s blood and falling down.

In the end, Fishburn determined the four life sentences should run consecutively, and Reinking was sentenced to an additional 114 years altogether on the remaining charges. Reinking faced 16 counts in total and was found guilty on all charges. Travis Reinking, 33, can expect to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Testifying on Tuesday, Shaw said she had run inside the restaurant to pick up an order for herself and two friends who stayed in the car and saw the shooting play out. Shaw described her actions as surveillance video was played in court. Reinking’s trial was stalled after he was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and treated at a state mental health institute. The next phase of the trial will come Saturday morning, as the jury will sentence Reinking to life with or without parole. Jurors handed down the sentence the following day after hearing about two hours of emotional testimony from family members of the four killed.

That’s when she saw the mangled, nearly severed leg of Dasilva’s girlfriend, Shantia Waggoner. Video showed her face contorted with terror as she reversed course and ran outside. The suspects – who have not been identified because they are minors – are being detained on gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Local radio DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two, was killed in the shooting. Several sources identified the shooter as Shannon Cortez Gooden, 38, who reportedly petitioned to have his gun rights restored in 2020 in relation to a 2008 felony assault conviction.

Evidence presented during the trial showed Reinking had schizophrenia and had suffered delusions for years, believing that unknown people were tormenting him. In July 2017, he was detained by the Secret Service after he ventured unarmed into a restricted area on the White House grounds and demanded to meet with then-President Donald Trump. Shaw took the stand on the second day of Reinking’s murder trial, after a riveting opening day of testimony in which witnesses described scenes of terror and bloodshed from the shooting attack. The letters were in a safe, taken as evidence from Reinking’s apartment — one to Taylor Swift and the other to Oprah. Reinking told a psychologist it was “a sign from God” that led him to the Antioch Waffle House.

Also testifying Monday was Sharita Henderson, who had been sitting by the door with her friend and sorority sister DeEbony Groves. The courtroom was also shown two images Reinking drew while in jail. A second picture was similar in nature but included a spaceship with aliens above the Waffle House.

Henderson said she made eye contact with Reinking before he shot her, certain he could see her look of begging for mercy. People react Friday after a jury found Travis Reinking guilty of first-degree murder in the deaths of four people at a Waffle House in 2018. Reinking stood nearly still with little to no show of emotion as the verdict was read in the courtroom. Psychologists testified that he suffered delusions and believed random people were part of a conspiracy against him. Indianapolis police said they went to the southside Waffle House about 12.30am after a total of six people were shot there. The violence began as an altercation between two groups, but it was not immediately clear if any victims fired shots, authorities said.

Jurors heard Reinking’s voice for the first time on Thursday, as they watched a portion of a 13-minute video YouTube video from a series he made. Nearly four years after the shooting, the trial filled with emotional testimony has ended with a modicum of closure for the victims’ families and survivors. Four people were killed — DeEbony Groves, 21, Akilah Dasilva, 23, Taurean Sanderlin, 29, and Joe Perez, 20 — in the early morning hours of April 22, 2018. A man who opened fire on a Nashville-area Waffle House in a deadly 2018 attack was sentenced Saturday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. It was up to the jury to decide whether he was sane enough at the time of the shooting to be found guilty of murder. The jury gave him four sentences of life without parole on the first-degree and felony murder charges.

The jury had the option of giving Reinking the chance for parole after serving 51 years in prison. The shooting came soon after two police officers and a firefighter-paramedic were fatally shot – and another officer was injured – while responding to a domestic violence call early Sunday morning in Burnsville, Minnesota. His behavior was so alarming that state police in Illinois, where he lived at the time, revoked Reinking’s state firearms owner identification. Reinking surrendered the guns to his father, who later returned them to his son. Defense attorney Luke Evans disputed Moore's claim that the law or justice requires each count be stacked to hold Reinking to account or support the victims.

Shooting investigation leads to 2 arrests

Fishburn's task Friday was to use victim impact testimony, along with guidelines in the law, to determine whether Reinking's sentences should be consecutive or concurrent, as well as the sentences on the other charges. "It really doesn't matter how I rule, justice is not going to be done," Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Mark Fishburn said. Sometimes, laws and the courts "just fall short" of that "theoretical and beautiful concept." Henderson told Groves to get down and tried to get on top of her to protect her. Groves was killed and Henderson was shot three times and, like Waggoner, continues to walk with crutches.

Parents arrested, charged with child neglect

Brooks said she believes he should not be allowed parole.Evidence presented during the trial showed Reinking had schizophrenia and had suffered delusions for years, believing that unknown people were tormenting him. He contacted law enforcement several times to report that he was being threatened, stalked and harassed. But that only meant he had to turn over his guns to someone else with valid identification. Shortly before the attack, he believed that someone had drugged him, broken into his apartment and raped him. Reinking told psychologists that while praying about what to do, he received a command from God to go to the Waffle House and shoot three people. To prove Reinking was not guilty by reason of insanity, defense attorneys had to show not only that he suffered from a severe mental illness, but also that the illness left him unable to understand the wrongfulness of his actions.

Waffle House shooting suspect Travis Reinking is expected to appear in court on Wednesday. "But that is not what the law says.... The most severe crimes can only be punished by the most severe punishments. Each victim in this case deserves their due." He was convicted in February of multiple first-degree murder charges and four felony murder charges, as well as a suite of other charges.

Kayla Shaw and James Shaw Jr., who are not related, suffered lesser injuries. Since law enforcement declined to take his delusions seriously, Reinking began to feel that they and other random people were part of a conspiracy against him, psychologists testified at trial. The jury will reconvene on Saturday to hear victim impact statements and decide whether Reinking will spend the rest of his life in prison or will have the possibility of parole. Travis Reinking, 33, was found guilty of four counts of murder Friday after the jury rejected his insanity defense in the rampage that also left four injured. He was charged with unlawful entry, but the charges were dismissed after he completed community service.

“What preliminary [information] we have is this was a disturbance which turned into a fight between two groups of people,” the Indianapolis police captain, Don Weilhammer, said to Fox59. “At least one handgun was recovered on the scene of the Waffle House. A source with knowledge of the investigation says Reinking was arrested near a wood line area behind an apartment complex, CNN's Nick Valencia reports. Alleged Waffle House gunman Travis Reinking is also suspected of stealing a 2018 BMW X6 from a dealership in Brentwood, Tennessee, last Tuesday.

TN couple arrested after baby left alone in car

In the end, Fishburn determined the four life sentences should run consecutively, and Reinking was sentenced to an additional 114 years altogether on the remaining charges. Reinking faced 16 counts in total and was found guilty on all charges. Travis Reinking, 33, can expect to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Shooting suspect refused to make a statement and asked for a lawyer

At the FBI's request, Reinking's Illinois firearms authorization was revoked, and four weapons -- including the AR-15 style rifle used in Sunday's shooting -- were seized. During opening statements, the prosecution argued Reinking went to Waffle House with intent to take lives, while his defense attorneys claimed he suffered from delusions for years leading up to that morning. On day two, jurors heard chilling details from those who survived the 2018 shooting.

Abede DaSilva, brother of shooting victim Akilah DaSilva, said he was relieved that the suspected gunman was arrested moments ago. Testifying on Monday, James Shaw, who is not related to Kayla Shaw, said that once outside Reinking used a racial slur, saying that Shaw had disarmed him. During much of the trial, Reinking watched the proceedings with no emotion as his parents and uncle were in attendance. Family members of the victims and survivors, including James Shaw, Jr., attended every day of the trial. Reinking pleaded insanity and, if the jury had agreed, he likely would have been sent to a mental institution, where mental health professionals could determine his freedom.

A man tackled the gunman and prevented more carnage inside the restaurant and throughout the community by disarming Reinking. James Shaw Jr. was the hero Nashville needed that day and for months to come. Prosecutors offered evidence and arguments that Reinking was calm and cooperative after his arrest. A patron has been credited with helping save lives by grabbing the gunman’s assault rifle to stop the April 22, 2018, attack. Taurean Sanderlin, 29; Joey Perez, 20; Akilah Dasilva, 23; and DeEbony Groves, 21; were killed in the attack.

That means he must prove not only that he was suffering from a severe mental illness but also that the mental illness made him unable to appreciate the wrongness of his actions. In opening statements Monday, defense attorney Luke Evans said Reinking was suffering from severe schizophrenia that had grown worse over the years. Flanked by his lawyers, Travis Reinking, reacts as the verdict is read during his murder trial Friday in Nashville, Tenn. A jury found Reinking guilty of first-degree murder in the deaths of four people at a Waffle House in 2018. Reinking is charged with four counts of first degree murder, along with other attempted murder and weapons charges. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 33-year-old defendant.

Speaker of the U S. House of Representatives Definition & Facts

speaker of the house role

The Speaker’s role within the House has also seen significant changes since 1789. Under the guidelines of Jefferson’s manual, which serves as a foundation for the House’s rules, the Speaker originally didn’t talk on the House floor during debates and only spoke when conducting parliamentary manners. From 1977 to 1995, three successive Democratic speakers – Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, Jim Wright and Tom Foley – reinvigorated the speakership. During the republic’s early years, the speakership gradually gained power.
