Paul M Mintz, antiques dealer who found valuable painting at a Baltimore thrift store, dies

Mr. Mintz resumed painting about 25 years ago and would decorate ravens on sweatshirts and neckties. He sold his works at the Pearl Gallery in Hampden and had his artwork reproduced on greeting cards. He exhibited at an Edgar Allan Poe themed show at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the old 26th Street Gallery and at the Peale Museum. He sold tin antique toys — including likenesses of Barney Google (a comic strip character created by Billy DeBeck) and Walt Disney figures. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany as a medic.

After his mother died in Richmond, Virginia, in 1811, he was taken into the home of John Allan, a Richmond merchant (presumably his godfather), and of his childless wife. He was later taken to Scotland and England (1815–20), where he was given a classical education that was continued in Richmond. He went to Boston, where in 1827 he published a pamphlet of youthful Byronic poems, Tamerlane, and Other Poems. Poverty forced him to join the army under the name of Edgar A. Perry, but, on the death of Poe’s foster mother, John Allan purchased his release from the army and helped him get an appointment to the U.S. Before going, Poe published a new volume at Baltimore, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems (1829).

The house was saved by the efforts of the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, which made arrangements with the city of Baltimore and opened the home as The Baltimore Poe House in 1949. Please meet museum staff at the base of the house steps at 203 N. Amity Street at your scheduled tour time. Tour duration for late arrivals cannot be extended and entry will be denied without refund 15 minutes after your scheduled start time. Richmond, Virginia

Come to Baltimore during the first weekend in October to attend the International Edgar Allan Poe Festival & Awards. Enjoy a bevy of Poe-themed events, including performances, tours and family-friendly activities. You can also visit Poe’s final resting place just a few blocks away at the Westminster Hall & Burying Ground. Comic books figure prominently in the exhibit. The very first American comic books — magazine-style anthologies of newspaper comic strips called “Famous Funnies” and “Funnies on Parade” — were printed in Connecticut. Framed examples of those historic documents are on the museum walls alongside those issued decades later by the Derby-based Charlton Comics company.

Please prepare and dress for inclement weather. Poe House is open for timed, small-group tours; each person in your party is required to have a ticket. Reservations are required and walk-ups are only permitted when space allows. Please visit our ticketing site to book a tour time. Poe would have been aware of the Old Stone House’s significance since the house was already appearing in guidebooks as a Richmond landmark. An 1843 book already refers to the century-old house as “the old Stone House” and calls it the oldest house in Richmond.

Essential digital access to quality FT journalism on any device. Find images of Edgar Allan Poe and see photos of his home and the adjoining exhibit area. While the exact dates of composition for Poe’s works is often complicated, it is reasonable to assume a number of stories, poems, and reviews were written by Poe during his stay on Amity Street. Misunderstanding, he replies "Look around, take your pick!"[17][18] The Wire chronicles the activities of the fictional Barksdale Organization based in west Baltimore, where the Poe House is located. In 2020, Poe House was entered into the American Library Association's United For Libraries Literary Landmarks Register.

He resigned from Burton’s about June 1840 but returned in 1841 to edit its successor, Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine, in which he printed “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”—the first detective story. In 1843 his “The Gold Bug” won a prize of $100 from the Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper, which gave him great publicity. In 1844 he returned to New York, wrote “The Balloon Hoax” for the Sun, and became subeditor of the New York Mirror under N.P. In the New York Mirror of January 29, 1845, appeared, from advance sheets of the American Review, his most famous poem, “The Raven,” which gave him national fame at once. Poe then became editor of the Broadway Journal, a short-lived weekly, in which he republished most of his short stories, in 1845.

In the event of emergency absence of key personnel, Poe House may be closed without prior warning. We will update the website and social media as soon as we learn of pending closure; all reserved tours will be notified as soon as possible before their visit. Edgar Allan Poe lived in Philly 6 years, in 5 different houses, and only one is still standing, one which he only rented for 2-3 months.
